London Named The Most Vegan-Friendly City In The World

London named most vegan-friendly city

For the fourth year in a row, London has been recognized as the city with the best vegan options in the world.

The plant-based restaurant directory HappyCow has released a list of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities for 2022. It is the first to be published since before the COVID-19 outbreak and is being issued in conjunction with World Vegan Month.

Berlin is in second rank, New York is third, and Melbourne is in fourth place after London.

Cities were evaluated based on a variety of factors, one of which was the number of vegan eateries found within a 10-kilometer radius of the city center. Additionally, the number of completely vegan-run businesses (such stores and bakeries), the perception of overall growth, and the level of activity in the plant-based groups were all taken into account.

The world’s top cities for vegans

Following are the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities, according to HappyCow:

  • London
  • Berlin
  • New York City
  • Melbourne
  • Singapore
  • Los Angeles
  • Bangkok
  • Amsterdam
  • Warsaw
  • Barcelona

More than 400 entirely vegan restaurants can be found in London. It has experienced an explosion of new stores, events, and businesses in addition to an abundance of eateries. These include meatless butchers and artisan non-dairy cheese producers, which have elevated the vegan lifestyle in London.

Since the 2019 list, Berlin and New York have traded spots. This might be a result of the overall decline in meat consumption in Germany. As a result of efforts to reduce meat eating, the average annual consumption of animal protein has decreased from 138 pounds to 121 pounds. This is a per-person decrease of 12.3%. Between 2016 and 2020, the number of vegans in Germany increased to 2.6 million.

But New York is making efforts to spread veganism. All local hospitals will now by default serve vegan food, according to a recent announcement. It coincides with Vegan Fridays, which are held in more than 1,700 New York district schools and provide kids with access to wholesome plant-based meals.

New cities added to the list of vegan cities

Portland, Prague, Tel Aviv, and Toronto are replaced in the Top 10 by Amsterdam, Barcelona, Melbourne, and Singapore.

Each of the newly listed cities’ fortunes are said to have changed as a result of an influx of new vegan enterprises. According to HappyCow, the number of completely vegan businesses has increased by 78% in Amsterdam specifically during the past three years. Similar development may be witnessed in Barcelona, which has reportedly increased by 74%.

Melbourne has historically been a city that prioritizes meat. The city, which jumped into the list in fourth place, is an example of the current mentality shift occurring in Australia. Additionally, it demonstrates that more than half (55%) of Australians and New Zealanders favor expanding restaurant options for vegan food.

“After a major drop in 2019-2021, the growth of vegan restaurants worldwide continues again at an even faster rate than we experienced in 2019… I’m happy to see veganism boom, attracting more plant-forward people and businesses across the world to grow the movement together!” said HappyCow’s founder, Eric Brent.
