First Vegan-Certified Paracetamol Developed in Germany

First Vegan-Certified Paracetamol

Paraveganio was developed by Axunio, a German pharmaceutical business, and includes entirely plant-based components. It is the first product to get vegan certification from The Vegan Society.

“By completely dispensing with animal additives, we guarantee a 100 percent vegan drug, and have also had this officially certified by The Vegan Society – as the very first pharmaceutical company in the world!” states Axunio on its website.

While paracetamol is one of the most widely used over-the-counter pain relievers, many people are unaware that most paracetamol products include magnesium stearate, an animal-derived ingredient.

Magnesium stearate, the magnesium salt of stearic acid, is widely utilized in the pharmaceutical sector for its lubricating characteristics in tablets and capsules. Stearic acid is a kind of fatty acid that is mainly generated from animal fats.

Animal-Free Ingredients

Paraveganio includes magnesium stearate extracted from 100% vegetable origin rather than animal-based magnesium stearate.

The paracetamol-based pain reliever is certified vegan and includes 500mg of the active component paracetamol. It can also be used to treat fevers and reduce mild to moderate pain, exactly like other paracetamol medicines.

According to The Vegan Society, animal-based components are included in almost 75% of the most regularly prescribed medications in the UK. Many more, of course, are subjected to animal testing before being approved for use.

“With the launch of our first vegan-certified drug, we want to initiate a long-term rethink in the pharmaceutical industry,” stated Julia von Horsten, product and business development manager for Axunio.

Vegan Medicines

The Vegan Society has reached a watershed point with the vegan certification.

For many years, the Vegan Society has advocated for the development of animal-free pharmaceuticals. Its 2017 campaign “Make More Medicines Vegan” petitioned the UK government to create more vegan options for the rising vegan population.

“We’re delighted to see our Vegan Trademark for the first time on a vegan medicinal product. We know that many vegans struggle to find a medication that is both suitable to their needs and in line with their beliefs, which can be distressing,” stated Ericka Durgahee, marketing manager at The Vegan Society, in a press statement.

Available in Germany

While Paraveganio tablets are now only accessible in Germany, Axunio aims to extend to other regions soon. Visit Axunio for more information on the vegan-friendly product.
