Slutty Vegan Opening in New York City

Slutty Vegan Burgers

Slutty Vegan, an Atlanta-based vegan burger company, is opening its first location in New York City. According to a press release, Aisha “Pinky” Cole’s new restaurant will open at 690 Fulton Street, near South Portland Avenue, in Fort Greene, sometime this spring. Eater has contacted out for further information.

What began as a mobile delivery business for vegan burger orders received via Instagram in 2018 evolved into a food truck. Slutty Vegan has grown into a full-fledged restaurant empire since then. Slutty Vegan currently has four brick-and-mortar locations in Atlanta, with plans to launch in Athens, Birmingham, and Baltimore, Maryland.

As Slutty Vegan grows, Cole has risen to national prominence for reasons other than her meatless burgers: she is known for empowering the Black community in vegan conversations and for humanitarian work aimed at providing economic possibilities to Atlanta’s underserved areas.

Cole’s cuisine has long queues and sometimes take up to three hours to serve. The packed vegan burgers, which employ Impossible Foods patties and Hawaiian buns, have names like One Night Stand (a patty topped with vegan bacon and cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, and tomato), Sloppy Toppy (with jalapenos), and Fussy Hussy (with jalapenos) (with pickles).

“At the end of the day, it has nothing to do with sex… I know that sex sells, so I thought how I can positively manipulate this. We want you to have an orgasmic experience and the ultimate feeling of euphoria that comes after having a vegan burger,” Cole said in an interview.

Vegan Slutty Brooklyn has taken over the old location of another vegan import, Broccoli Bar, which closed last month after debuting in 2020 and was founded by a Vermont couple. Cole’s return to the northeast is a kind of a homecoming: her first restaurant, the non-vegan Pinky’s Jamaican & American Restaurant, was in Harlem and closed in 2016 due to a fire.

“It’s an honor to be opening a concept in such an established space, just down the street from where Biggie Smalls grew up, and to bring more delicious vegan food to the Brooklyn community!” Cole stated in the press release.
