Coolhaus Eliminates Use Of Dairy With Help From Perfect Day’s Animal-Free Whey

The Urgent Company (TUC), the consumer packaged goods division of food technology startup Perfect Day, has just obtained ice cream brand Coolhaus, marking TUC’s first brand acquisition. Perfect Day’s animal-free whey, which the startup creates by employing yeast-based microflora to produce dairy-identical milk proteins, a technology that eliminates the need to exploit cows, will enable Coolhaus transition to a 100% dairy-free company in the coming months.

The companies will collaborate to achieve their individual and combined goals of making the ice cream industry more equal and sustainable. “Bringing together our social and climate missions is deeply personal…We know the work we do now will determine if our children can continue to enjoy the food we eat and the planet we inhabit for years to come,” stated Paul Kollesoff, general manager and co-founder of TUC.

Coolhaus Is Eliminating Dairy

Coolhaus was founded in 2009 by Natasha Case and Freya Estreller with the goal of empowering women, BIPOC, and the LGBTQ community. The company began with dairy-based ice cream pints and has now expanded its product line to include other flavors.

Peanut Butter Fudge Chip, Horchata Breakfast, Salted Caramel Crunch, Mocha Marcona Almond Fudge, and Chocolate Campfire S’mores are among the 13 vegan ice cream flavors introduced by Coolhaus in 2019. Last year, the company added a mini-pint format to their vegan lineup, with flavors like Best of Both Worlds Vanilla, Cookie Dough Lyfe, and Dirty Mint Chip. Coolhaus uses a special blend of pea protein, brown rice, and cocoa butter in all of their dairy-free ice cream.

Vegan ice cream cones in Farmer’s Market Strawberry, Cookie Dough Lyfe, and Cookies and Cream flavors were recently introduced by the company, which is available at 6,000 shops including Walmart, Whole Foods Market, and Kroger.

TUC’s acquisition will assist the company in transitioning its remaining dairy products to Perfect Day’s animal-free whey, which emits up to 97 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Animal-Free Whey From Perfect Day

Perfect Day was launched in 2014 by vegan entrepreneurs and dairy aficionados Ryan Pandya and Perumal Gandhi with the goal of replacing traditional dairy production with a revolutionary technology that utilizes considerably fewer resources and does not exploit animals. Perfect Day is the most well-funded company in the precision fermentation sector, having raised $750 million from a number of like-minded investors, including actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio.

Perfect Day’s groundbreaking animal-free whey is now available to consumers through a variety of channels. Through redistributor Dot Foods, the company teamed with sorbet and gelato producer Villa Dolce earlier this year to distribute Perfect Day-powered sweets to more than 2,000 food service providers. Two Starbucks shops are presently testing milk prepared using the startup’s animal-free whey.

Perfect Day has collaborated with established brands such as N!ck’s and Graeters to make animal-free ice cream products, and in 2019, the company paired with Kollesoff (a dairy industry veteran) to launch TUC, a consumer goods subsidiary. 

Coolhaus joins TUC’s existing brands, which include ice cream and sweets brand Brave Robot, cheese brand Modern Kitchen, and fitness nutrition brand California Performance Co., all of which employ Perfect Day’s animal-free whey instead of dairy to make dairy-identical vegan products. TUC will collaborate with a significant national retailer to launch an exclusive animal-free dairy CoolHaus x Brave Robot co-branded novelty product in 2022.
