Burberry has said that exotic skins would no longer be used in their creations.
Any skin that is not from cattle is classified as exotic. Some examples are snakes, crocodiles, alligators, and ostrich hides. However, in recent years, a number of firms have stopped their usage owing to animal welfare concerns and increased pressure from environmentalists.
Burberry joins the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Victoria Beckham, Chanel, and Moda Operandi in their new ban, which was announced during the company’s FY22 results call this week.
PETA, an animal rights organization, applauded the announcement.
“During Burberry’s annual meeting last year, PETA UK asked when it would make good on its commitment to be ‘a force for good in the world’ by banning exotic skins,” said PETA UK’s vice president Mimi Bekhechi in a statement.
“We’re delighted that after years of pressure from PETA entities around the world, that day is today.”
Ethical Luxury Fashion?
Burberry’s prohibition on fur and angora came into effect four years ago. “Modern luxury means being socially and environmentally responsible. This belief is core to us at Burberry and key to our long-term success,” stated the brand’s chief executive Marco Gobbetti.
“We are committed to applying the same creativity to all parts of Burberry as we do to our products.”
Gucci, Prada, Armani, Michael Kors, and Versace are among the labels that have banned fur in recent years. “Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right,” Donatella Versace, Versace’s artistic director, said to The Economist’s 1843 magazine.
The premium clothes industry is always evolving. Coperni just launched apple leather bags with Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams. Ganni, a Danish manufacturer, went even farther, promising to abandon leather entirely in favor of plant-based alternatives.
“Selling leather products, although highly profitable, will soon be as outdated as smoking on TV,” Ganni’s creator Nicolaj Reffstrup stated.
