SCiFi Foods Partners with Michigan State University

Michigan State University will collaborate with the cell-based meat business SCiFi Foods to test and perfect the plant-based component of its first cultivated beef burgers.

The famous MSU Food Processing and Innovation Center (FPIC) will collaborate with SCiFi to carry out the first test runs for the business’s first commercial product, which mixes plant-based beef with its ground-breaking cultured beef cells. According to SCiFi, the pilot runs are a crucial stage in the product development process that will move the business closer to receiving regulatory approval. The company adds that the runs will assist guarantee that the enlarged product is still delectable, secure, economical, and as nutritionally sound as possible.

The plant-based element of the burger will be blended with beef cells from SCiFi’s lab when the final formulation and test runs are finished to guarantee that both blend well and produce a premium final product.

SCiFi believes that it will be able to move much more swiftly and receive helpful insights throughout the production and scaling process by collaborating with FPIC and the university’s Center for Research on Ingredient Safety. The research facilities at MSU have previously collaborated with top food businesses like Bumble Bee Foods, Cargill, The Coca-Cola Company, and ConAgra as well as governmental agencies like the FDA and USDA.

Making an impact

The startup SCiFi recently revealed a big achievement in lowering the cost of cultured beef, just months after coming out of stealth mode. Myra Pasek, a former executive at Tesla and Impossible Foods, was added to SCiFi’s advisory board in June. SCiFi also raised $22M in Series A funding at the same time.
