Nutropy, a French company, has raised €2 million in pre-seed capital for its dairy products without the use of animals. The funding will be used by the female-led firm to introduce the cheeses on a large-scale.
Nutropy produces animal-free casein using precise fermentation technology. It was founded by Nathalie Rolland and Dr. Maya Bendifallah. This milk protein, which until recently could only be derived from animal sources, is what gives cheese its stretchiness and creaminess.
“We want to offer consumers a wide range of cheeses free of lactose and dietary cholesterol.”
Additionally, Nutropy is creating dairy fatty acids devoid of animal products. According to the business, it is possible to produce goods that are remarkably comparable to high-end dairy cheeses by combining these substances with cheese cultures.
Beast, Trellis Road, and Big Idea Ventures (the startup participated in the latter’s accelerator program earlier this year) led Nutropy’s pre-seed round. Along with the French government, other supporters included VegCapital, FoodHack, Techmind, and others.
Environmentally friendly alt dairy
A number of businesses in Europe use precise fermentation to produce alternative dairy products, like Nutropy. Other brands include Better Dairy in the UK, Formo in Germany, and Real Deal Milk in Spain. According to the technique, producing protein is now more environmentally friendly and uses a lot less resources than traditional dairy.
“As cheese lovers, we know the importance of cheese in our gastronomic culture and want to offer consumers a wide range of cheeses free of lactose and dietary cholesterol that are produced in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner,” Nutropy CEO Nathalie Rolland stated.
Within 24 months, the business hopes to introduce its first cheeses.
